Clay Chiminea Large

Clay chimineas are a great way to enjoy an outdoor fire pits & chimineas. They are more fragile than iron ones and require special attention to ensure they last for a long time.

Before you use your Chiminea for the first time, make sure you fill it with sand about 3-4 inches below the mouth of the chiminea. This will protect the chiminea from the first few fires from flame contact and let it get a season.

Material

Clay chimineas have been used for about four hundred years to gather for food and conversation and to keep warm in the home. They are typically constructed of terracotta but they can also be made of other materials like cast iron or steel.

Cast iron is more durable than terracotta, and it is less prone to damage from abrupt temperature changes. However, it is susceptible to cracks or break easily if it is not shielded from rain or snow. Terracotta is less durable, but gives the chiminea a traditional Mexican appearance.

It is important to cure a new clay chiminea before using it for the first time. This will stop cracking from the sudden temperature changes of the fire. This is accomplished by adding two to three inches (or more) of river sand at the bottom of the chiminea. After that, start with small pieces of wood and gradually increase the size of the wood that you use. After some small fires the clay is ready to start using.

Clay chimineas are also often sealed to prevent moisture from destroying them over time. This is a good idea for any outdoor fire pit, but it is especially important for clay chimineas as the clay absorbs water, and if it's exposed to it frequently enough, it could crack.

While a clay chiminea is less likely to break than metal, it will still require some care to prevent moisture damage. Clay chimineas must be covered when not utilized and should not be kept in a closed space. Moisture can cause the clay to crack or break.

Clay chimineas are more heavy than other chimineas and must be placed on a base that is designed for outdoor fire pits. A hearth for a patio is a good option to accomplish this, since it creates a fire-safe zone on a wooden deck or patio. The hearth for the patio must be at least 3 by 4 feet in size and could be constructed from bricks or pavers. If you don't wish to build a hearth for your patio, you can place the chiminea in an area of level garden soil, however this is not recommended since it may crack or break the chiminea in time.

Chimineas are becoming more popular, they create the perfect atmosphere for relaxing outdoors but also provide a lot of heat which makes them ideal for cooking or simply enjoying the company of family and friends. They are available in a wide range of styles and sizes, ranging from traditional clay models to contemporary cast iron and stainless steel models. They are among the most versatile garden tools available and can be utilized for a variety of reasons, such as cooking, heating, lighting and decoration.

Chimineas are incredibly fragile and prone to cracking due to the fact that they are able to endure changes in humidity and temperature, therefore it is crucial to care for them properly. A cover can protect them against rain damage, which can cause them become weaker over time and crack. It is also recommended to put at least 50mm of sand, or Gardeco lava stones (see the accessories above) in the bottom of the chimenea, this will protect it from direct heat and keep the hottest part of the fire from touching the clay, which can cause cracks in the clay.

It is also a good idea to put on a clay cap as this can help stop water seepage, which can cause cracks and weakening as time passes. Chimeneas with caps made of clay are a bit more costly than non-capped ones but it's a worthwhile investment because it will significantly prolong their lifespan. It is also an excellent idea to keep them away from fire-prone objects since this could result in an accident. It is also important to not place them in windy areas because this can cause smoke to flow in unintended directions which may make it difficult to use.
